Natíl athletes get discount privileges

The Philippine Sports Commission has released two batches of identification cards and discount booklets for national athletes, who can now enjoy discount privilege while buying essential stuff.

The 20 percent discount to national athletes and coaches is pursuant to Republic Act 10699 or the “National Athletes and Coaches Benefits and Incentives Act”.

More than 1,000 discount kits have been given to national athletes and coaches, including boxer Nesthy Petecio and marathoner Mary Joy Tabal.

“Thank you, PSC! Unexpected delivery! I have 20 percent discount now,” Petecio shared.

“National athlete privilege, excited to avail this! Thank you Philippine Sports Commission for making this possible," Tabal added.

Both posted their reactions on social media.

The release of the discount privileges is timely as all the sportsmen are hampered by the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic.

“We have always been supportive of our athletes and coaches and we hope this privilege help in easing their burdens caused by Covid-19,” PSC chairman Butch Ramirez said.

Manuel Bitog, the PSC division chief for assistance and coordination, said that the third batch of discount ID's and booklets is expected to be released by the third week of September.

Last month, Ramirez said he hopes that national athletes and coaches will also be considered in the passing of the Bayanihan to Recover as One Act.

He said House of Representatives Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano and Congressman Bambol Tolentino have already inquired about adding some more funds for the athletes' allowances in the budget under the proposed Bayanihan to Recover as One Act or the Bayanihan 2 bill.*PNA
