Proper handwashing drive launched
BY SHIELA G. GELERA

A campaign for proper hand washing at #SafeHandsAtSM among the 74 SM malls nationwide, including in Bacolod City, was virtually launched yesterday.

Steven Tan, president of SM Supermalls, said during the Zoom media launch yesterday that proper hand washing with soap and water is one of the simplest ways to control the spread of the coronavirus disease, as stated by the World Health Organization.

Tan said they launched the campaign to influence the hand washing habits of Filipinos, to raise awareness on the importance of practicing proper hygiene, and to promote clean hands through a simpler five-step hand washing routine, especially during this time of health crisis.

The five steps are wash palm, back of hands, scrub in between fingers, fingernails, and thumbs.

Since the initiative is in partnership with Procter and Gamble, shoppers will have access to Safeguard liquid hand soaps in all of the malls’ public restrooms to reinforce proper hand washing as part of the “new normal”.

Aside from hand washing, the SM management has already implemented several safety measures for the mallgoers by not allowing persons, who are not wearing facemasks, to enter the mall premises, checking of body temperature, practicing social distancing, sanitizing of hands and shoes, and placing of alcohol dispensers.

“We used technology to help us sanitize our walls. We use UV light to clean the handrails and the elevators. We also have a lot of posters and reminders to practice safe distancing,” Tan said.

Contactless payments, such as the use of QR codes and other methods using smartphones are also being done in the malls, he said.

To make hand washing, which is the first line of defense against COVID-19, more fun for everyone, the SM management also launched a TikTok Challenge and 10 winners will receive SM gift certificates and Safeguard products.

Participants should choose their favorite KPOP/OPM/POP music, take a full body video for the handwashing dance series to the beat of the music, upload the handwashing video on TikTok with the hashtag #SafeHandsAtSM, and tag friends to also join the challenge. It started yesterday until June 30.*
