Cases could hit 3,592, Drilon says
BY CARLA P. GOMEZ

COVID-19 positive cases in Negros Occidental and Bacolod City could hit a high of 3,592 by the end of August, Dr. Julius Drilon, chairman of the Department of Health COVID-19 Regional Team for Bacolod and Negros Occidental, and chief of the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital, warned yesterday.

The computer generated forecast is based on the DOH Western Visayas daily reports of COVID-19 cases in these areas, he said.

Drilon said estimates for Negros Occidental and Bacolod City show that by August 31, the cumulative number of COVID-19 cases in Negros Occidental is expected to hit 2,581.

The highest forecasted number of COVID-19 cases for August 31 or the upper class limit is 3,592 and lowest estimated figure or lower class limit is 1,799, he said.

At the CLMMRH molecular laboratory, 15 to 20 percent of the tests they conduct daily turn out COVID positive.

Drilon said he released the forecasted figures “not to alarm but to prepare us.”

Meanwhile, Drilon in a letter to Bacolod Mayor Evelio Leonardia has informed him that the CLMMRH molecular laboratory Automated Extraction Kits needed for the processing and detection of COVID-19 are already below critical level.

So effective yesterday, the CLMMRH laboratory would stop accepting swab samples from the Bacolod City Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit for processing and detecting COVID-19, he said.

“To ensure the sustainability of our operations, we deem it necessary to reserve the use of our few remaining Automated Extraction Kits for our healthcare workers,” he added.

There are other operational molecular laboratories in Bacolod where the city government can send its swab samples for processing, such as those as the Philippine Red Cross, The Doctors’ Hospital, and the Bacolod Queen of Mercy Hospital, Drilon told the mayor.*
