Coop bank celebrates milestone

The Negros Cooperative Bank has moved to its new location at the D’ North Gate Building at B.S. Aquino Drive, Bacolod City.

The inauguration of the new office on Saturday was led by its president and chairman, Nestor Bayona, with Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson and former governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. as guests.

Lacson congratulated the members, directors and officers of all the 44-member cooperatives of NCB, adding that he hopes they will continue to have excellent collaboration with the government and the people.

“I have always believed in the value of people’s inclusion and empowerment, that such will strengthen the government and further develop economic and social progress,” Lacson said.

He added that to boost the Negros economy, it is the provincial government’s thrust that the public-private sector partnership should be pursued to support its development agenda and economic recovery programs.

Lacson said that achieving real and sustainable development can only be achieved when all sectors of society work together for a common goal.

In October 2019, members of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan passed a resolution authorizing Lacson to demand that the NCB vacate and terminate the deed of usufruct between the provincial government and the cooperative bank on the use of the 526-square meter lot at the Capitol Park and Lagoon in Bacolod.

This was allegedly due to a breach of contract as the cooperative bank had not paid its water and electricity bills to the provincial government for 12 years, since year 2007. Bayona was a provincial consultant of the previous administration.

Bayona, in an earlier interview, explained that the NCB was a project of the province through the late governor Joseph Marañon, who wanted to provide the cooperatives easier access to credit at lower interest.*
