Two-week 8 to 4 curfew
starts tomorrow: mayor
BY CARLA P. GOMEZ

Mayor Evelio Leonardia last night confirmed that an 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. curfew in Bacolod will start tomorrow to help curb the rising number of COVID-19 cases in the city.

Leonardia said he is issuing an executive order today that will impose the 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. two-week curfew from August 9 to 22.

The current curfew in Bacolod City is from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m.

Leonardia said he decided to impose the new curfew based on the recommendation of the City Health Officer and other city officials that it be implemented right away.

The Bacolod Sangguniang Panlungsod on Wednesday approved City Ordinance No. 934, Series of 2020, granting the mayor’s imposition of new curfew hours, where there is a compelling health and safety basis, for not more than two weeks during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The penalty for violation of the curfew or non-social period is P500 or 8 hours of community service.

Non-Bacolod residents will be fined P1,000, the ordinance added.

Leonardia pointed out that Mayor Jerry Treñas also issued an 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. curfew in Iloilo City, that even has less COVID-19 cases than Bacolod City.

Treñas, on his Facebook page yesterday, said, “I have been receiving complaints about the new curfew in our (Iloilo) city especially coming from the business sector. I fully understand your plight, but I am asking for your understanding. This is also a tough decision for me, but I choose the lives of many people rather than the income of the city. This is for the greater good of the people”.*
