Another child dies in fire

A 5-year-old boy is the seventh fire fatality in a span of three days in Bacolod City, after another fire hit four houses in Purok Sigay, Barangay 2, at about 5:32 a.m. yesterday.

The victim was Raniel Macapal, who was left at the second floor of the house owned by Belinda Cuadra, where the fire started, Bacolod Fire Marshal Chief Insp. Publio Ploteña said yesterday.

Cuadra is the cousin of Macapal’s mother, who was not in the area when the fire broke out.

Ploteña said the house of Cuadra was destroyed, while damaged were the houses of Silvia Sugilon, Bernardo Galicia and Jose Bonza Sr.

A woman, who happened to be sleeping at the house of Cuadra when the fire broke out, carried an infant in one arm, while holding Macapal with her other hand as they tried to escape from the second floor of the burning house, Ploteña said.

However, the woman had to let go of the hand of Macapal, when she tried to get the infant, who had fallen.

Macapal was left at the second floor as fire grew bigger.

About P30,000 worth of properties were gutted and fire-out was declared at 6:10 a.m. yesterday, Ploteña said.

He said the houses were made of light materials and the pathway in the area was narrow.

The Bacolod Bureau of Fire Protection was still investigating the cause of the fire as of press time.

In 2013, fire also razed 14 houses in Purok Sigay.*
