The involvement of an 8-year-old boy in the fatal shooting of his own father Wednesday in Brgy. San Jose, Sipalay City, Negros Occidental, was considered a “closed case” and “good as solved” by the police yesterday.
Lt. Col. Necerato Sabando, officer-in-charge of the Sipalay City police, justified his assessment saying that the suspect is a minor, who cannot be charged in court, even if they have established that he was the perpetrator of the crime.
The minor is now under the custody of the Department of Social Welfare and Development.
Jessy Obas, 39, the father of the suspect, succumbed to three gunshot wounds in the chest, and the gun used in the commission of the crime also belonged to him.
The suspect and his two other siblings were allegedly being maltreated by the victim, whenever he was under the influence of liquor, a police investigation showed.
Sabando said they cannot establish yet if the suspect was remorseful for what he had done to his jobless father, since he is now under the custody of the DSWD.
Before the shooting incident, Obas had reportedly scolded and maltreated his 8-year-old son.
The suspect is the youngest among the three siblings. Their mother is working in Manila.*
