The VMA Global College table tennis team emerged as overall champion in both high school boys and girls’ category to dominate the competition in NOPSSCEA Seasson ’39 held the previous weekend at VMA GC Gym.
Composed of Khenjie Luis David Gernalin, John Tuso, Roan Vasquez, and Mel John Valdez the VMA GC high school boys team retained the championship by outplaying University of St. La Salle in the final while St. Scholastica’s Academy – Bacolod placed second runner-up.
Valdez also secured the gold medal in singles event after prevailing over teammate Roan Vasquez in the all-VMA championship round while Mark Lambadura of USLS settled for the second runner-up honors.
In the girls’ division, the VMA GC team, composed of Kaira Agreda, Trexie Alarcon, Gwyn Eirene Gaviola, and Kyla Manansala dethroned last year’s champion USLS. Last year’s first runner-up St. Scholastica’s Academy slipped to third place this year.
The La Salle team, however, salvaged the girls’ singles event gold medal after outstanding player Micah Tanate edged VMA GC’s Agreda in the final round. Agreda’s teammate, Trexie Alarcon, won the bronze medal.
In elementary competition, USLS kept its dominance over House of Praise Learning Center in the boys’ division to retain the championship. Like last year, St. Scholastica’s finished third.
In girls’ category, SSA-B also successfully defended its title against House of Praise in the championship round while St. John’s Institute placed third.
USLS also prevailed in the boys’ single event with a 1-2 finish while House of Praise reigned in the girls’ singles with SSA-B landing at third.
“We would like to congratulate all our elementary and high school winners and we hope that their winning streak will extend to the provincial meet next month,” NOPSSCEA chairman on sports Dr. Carlitos Orola said.
He added that the table tennis college competition will be held this weekend with USLS as the defending champion in both the men and women’s division.*
