An alleged “supporter” of the New People's Army is now in jail, after his arrest Friday for illegal possession of a firearm and an explosive in Sitio Tamao, Brgy. Langub, Escalante City, Negros Occidental.
The police arrested Francisco Laza, 53, of Brgy. Buenavista, Escalante City, for possession of a .38 caliber revolver with five live ammunition and an apple type hand grenade.
An Escalante City Police Station report yesterday said that Laza, who was riding a motorcycle, tried to escape, after he and his companion ignored policemen manning a checkpoint, who flagged them down.
Laza fell off the motorcycle and that led to his arrest by the Negros Occidental Police Mobile Force Company blocking force. His companion, who was driving the motorcycle, managed to escape.
Recovered was a back pack containing three “Mabuhay ang Ika-50 anniversary ng NPA-Roselyn Jean Pelle Command” and DARIFA (Danao Fishermen Association, Escalante City-Negros Occidental) streamers, a poster of Anak Pawis partylist and other subversive documents, the police said.
The National Federation of Sugarcane Workers, on the other hand, issued a statement claiming that the military had ransacked the houses of Laza, DARIFA chairperson, Bienvenido Jipitulan, and five others in Sitio Lawis, Brgy. Langub, Escalante City.
The NFSW further claimed that the recovered revolver and grenades were planted.
Illegal searches on houses were also reported by NFSW in Sitio Dugma, Brgy. Winaswasan, Calatrava.*
