The Lopue's Table Tennis Association (LopTTA) team of Leonito "Diotay" Lopue captured the 1st and 3rd runner-up honors in the team open event of the recently concluded 1st Francis Sio Memorial Cup Table Tennis Championships held at Robinsons Jaro, Iloilo on July 29-30.
The loptta team composed of John Michael Castro, John Paul Gubaton, Marell Lagunday and Mark Francis Jimenez settled for the 1st runner-up honors after losing in the final 2-0 against Baptist team A composed of Nikko Oliva, Gee-ar Gicana, Jay Gayoso and Sean Sabay.
En-route to the championship round, the team topped their bracket with a clean sweep win against team DUTTA (Dumangas), ITTEDA (Iloilo), and LEGENDS-B (Bacolod City) all in straight sets, 2-0.
In the quarterfinals, the LopTTA paddlers defeated LEGENDS-A composed of Ferdinand Jong, Danilo Abonales, Rolando Raganas, Angel Cuenca Jr. and Nikki Puentebella 2-0.
In the semi-finals, it was an all LOPTTA match between LOPTTA-B composed of Pastor Hosea Alvarez, James Saligumba, Elmer Locsin and Neil John Lauren and LOPTTA-A with the latter prevailing with a score of 2-0.
LOPTTA-B earned the semi final slot after claiming the No. 2 spot in the elimination round then defeating BAPTIST team B composed of Cyrus Tolentino, Jay Canalin, Kiril Tolentino and John Nino Gayoso in a decider 2-1.
A total of 16 teams saw action in the team open event organized by the relatives of the late Francis Sio and Mr. Cyrus Tolentino, who acted as the tournament director of the event.*
