Nietes retains WBO belt

Donnie “Ahas” Nietes forced Raul Garcia to quit after five rounds while “King” Arthur Villanueva was declared winner after Juan Jimenez failed to get up from the canvass in the fourth round as both Negrense fighter scored big wins Saturday night in Pinoy Pride 36 at the St. La Salle Coliseum in Bacolod City.

Nietes said he is happy to score a convincing win before his townmates while Villanueva said he was determined to knockout Jimenez had their fight progressed to 12 rounds.

“We had a game plan and I stuck to it,” Nietes said as he started slow, feeling Garcia out and testing his strength in the first two rounds.

Pa-oyon tops IBP chess tourney

Lawyer Hermilo Pa-oyon dominated the 1 st Integrated Bar of the Philippines-Negros Occidental Rapid Chess Tournament Saturday at the Bacolod City Hall of Justice.

After seven rounds, Pa-oyon registered 5.5 points, the same output as that of lawyer Dennis Cortes, but Pa-oyon prevailed in the tie break via the win-over-the-other rule.

Cortes settled for first runner-up honors while lawyer Alex Abastillas placed second runner-up, Judge Abraham Bayona, third runner-up, and lawyer Edmundo Manlapao, fourth runner-up.
