Agricultural development in Western Visayas increased in 2014, a report presented by Department of Agriculture Regional Director Roy Abaya to the Negros Occidental's association of city and municipal agriculturists at the Bacolod Pavillion Hotel in Bacolod City yesterday.
Abaya also commended Negros Occidental for its increase in agricultural production.
Agriculture posted a 0.30 percent output increment in the first nine months of 2014 wherein outputs in the crops and livestock subsectors increased, he said.

ports vs. bird flu

Negros Occidental Veterinarian Renante Decena yesterday said that quarantine measures are being undertaken at the province's air and seaports to prevent the entry of bird flu.
A temporary ban has been issued by the Department of Agriculture on the importation of birds and their products from Germany and other countries to protect the country from the risks of bird flu, he noted.
Being monitored are the Bacolod-Silay Airport and the Banago, Bredco, Cadiz , Escalante, Pulupandan, San Carlos, Sagay and Victorias seaports, Decena added.
The Sugar Regulatory Administration in collaboration with the Technical Education and Skills Development Agency held a National Consultation for Competency Standards in Sugarcane Production at its La Granja training center in La Carlota City, Negros Occidental, yesterday.
The consultation targets to have a TESDA accredited training program for sugarcane production that will upgrade the skills and competency of sugarcane farmers and workers, that will lead to increase in productivity and competitiveness of sugarcane farms, a press release from SRA said.
SRA Administrator Ma. Regina Bautista-Martin stressed the importance of the consultation and and encouraged everybody to speak up and share their expertise and experiences.
