Slain cop buried in EB Magalona

Senior Police Officer 4 Roger Canete was buried yesterday with full military honors at the public cemetery of EB Magalona in Negros Occidental.

Canete, a member of the Silay City Police Station, was gunned down in front of his residence in Brgy. 2 poblacion, EB Magalona on Feb. 18.

Two suspects, PO2 Reynaldo Bernil and former police asset Carlo Reosura, have been charged for the murder of Canete, whose death is believed to be related to his active involvement in the anti-drug campaign in Silay City.

Supt. Rosauro Francisco, Silay City police chief, vowed yesterday to exert more effort in arresting those behind the illegal drug trade in the city.

Records of the Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office show that the Silay City police is among the police units with the highest number of arrested drug peddlers since 2013.

The assassination of PO2 John Gallenero Jr. in La Carlota City, with two policemen tagged as the suspects, was also reported to be drug-related.

The death of SPO2 Edsel Villanueva in San Carlos City on Feb. 23, was also job-related, police investigations showed.

The police have established that the assassin of Villanueva, a member of the Calatrava Police Station, and SPO1 Agustin Hulleza, who was also shot and killed in San Carlos City in 2013, is the same person, and believed to be a gun-for-hire.

The police is offering P50,000 reward for the arrest of alleged police assassin, identified as Marcial Garingo y Librando, who is now facing two murder charges for the deaths of Villanueva and Hulleza.*GPB
