The elite Scout Ranger of the Philippine Army is back in Negros island, but only as a small-size unit.
The 3rd Scout Ranger Company, that forms part of the 1st Scout Ranger Battalion, has been placed under the supervision of the 302nd Infantry Brigade in Negros Oriental, military records show.
The three other 1st SRB companies are presently deployed in Samar, following their successful operations against the Moro National Liberation Front in Zamboanga September last year.
Its former commander, Lt. Col. Oriel Pangcog, who was awarded with Distinguished Conduct Star by President Benigno Aquino III, in recognition of his exemplary leadership displayed during the Zamboanga crisis, is now assigned at Camp Aguinaldo in Quezon City.
Pangcog served as 1st SRB commander for one year and nine months.
The return of the Scout Rangers unit to Negros was requested by the 302nd Infantry Brigade, a source within the military said.
The 1st SRB had been assigned in Negros island for several years, before they were shipped to Zamboanga last year, to help address the hostage crisis.
PFC Ian Paquit, a member of the 3rd Scout Ranger Company, who was killed while saving his fellow Scout Ranger troopers in a fierce firefight with the MNLF fighters in Zamboanga, was awarded a Medal of Valor (posthumous), the highest military decoration of the Armed Forces of the Philippines.*GPB
