6 LGUs receive assistance

Six local government units in Negros Occidental affected by continuous heavy rains due to typhoon "Goring" received P700,000 in relief assistance in the form of rice, sardines and noodles, recently, a Capitol press release said.

Affected LGUs were Valladolid, San Enrique and Bago City that were declared to be under a state of calamity, as well as Pulupandan, Ilog and EB Magalona. "Goring" affected a total of 9,964 families in 46 barangays of these LGUs, and they received assistance from the local, provincial and national governments, the press release said. Gov. Joseph Maraņon released close to P300,000 in relief assistance through the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office.

The LGUs also released from their calamity funds about P300,000; another P180,000 was provided by the national government through the Department of Social Welfare and Development; and Rep. Jeffrey Ferrer of the 4th District also gave close to P30,000 to Valladolid and San Enrique, the press release said.

Local Disaster Coordinating Councils assisted in the rehabilitation and restoration activities.

Families reported to have sought refuge in evacuation centers have already returned to their houses, have restored normal economic activities and are beginning to rehabilitate their ricefields and other crops, the press release said.

Relief assistance coming from civic organizations, and non-government organizations are distributed directly to the areas in coordination with the LDCCs of the affected LGUs, the press release added.*

PICE-NOC convention set

The Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers Inc.-Negros Occidental Chapter headed by Aladino Agbones will hold the 2007 PICE Local Midyear Convention and Election of Officers and Directors, Oct. 12, at Sugarland Hotel, in Bacolod City, a press release from the group said.

Highlights of the convention are the technical session on the National Building Code regulations with Bacolod building official Teresita Guadalupe as speaker; and a products presentation. The registration fee of P1,000 includes snacks, lunch and certificates.

MassKara SuperMom
pageant 2007 now on

The 4th "MassKara SuperMom" pageant on the theme "Icons of Negros" is now open to interested mothers aged 21 to 40 years, a press release from Mom's Radio 90.3 FM, presentor of this year's search, said.

Today is the deadline for submission of entry forms, and screening and grand coronation day dates will be announced by the station.

Last year's winner was Cherry Ann Biaco, a guidance counselor/educator of a university in Bacolod City.

Guhit Pinoy holds exhibit

Works of Filipino artists will be featured in a week-long exhibit of Guhit Pinoy Filipino Illustrators Society today at Nojoud mall in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, as part of their Ramadan Festival 2007 celebration, a press release from the artists said.

Philippine Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Antonio Villamor will open the art exhibit.

Featured artists are Natalio Alob, Rod Aquino, Mario Bactol, George Besinga, Ismael Esber, Ramero Firmeza, Nes Gelito, Mario Sta. Maria, Richard Mascunana, Willy Mendoza, George Pontino, Jr., Manny Pantaleon, Val Pabulos, Rico Rival, Edbon Sevilleno, Mel Versoza and Lito Ysip.

Six of them are Negrenses and are alumni of La Consolacion College and University of St. La Salle, in Bacolod City, the press release said.

Members of Guhit Pinoy are mostly from the comics industry, animation, publishing and a few from advertising agencies from the Philippines.

The exhibit is aimed at acknowledging the hospitality of their second home, KSA, and to strengthen the Philippines-KSA relationship.
