Guihulngan becomes
sixth city of NegOr

BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

Guihulngan, the biggest municipality in Oriental Negros, is now a city after a plebiscite confirmed the approval of its residents Saturday.

Election officer Roy Aragones said the plebiscite reported a substantial participation of the people who voted yes to the cityhood of Guihulngan.

The city of Guihulngan has a population of more than 102,000 and more than P54 million in yearly income.

From an Internal Revenue Allotment of P94 million, it will be receiving P350 million. City officials intend to push through livelihood programs, farm to market roads and financial assistance to farmers.

With the increased IRA, the export industry will also be given priority, officials said.

The move to convert Guihulngan into a city was initiated in the House of Representatives by former Rep. Jacinto "Jing" Paras (1st District, Negros Oriental).

It also got the support of congresswoman-elect and former town mayor Jocelyn Limkaihcong, during the candidates forum in Guihulngan before the elections.*JG .
