The Office of the Provincial Agriculturist is implementing measures to control the pest infestation in some rice fields in Negros Occidental.
Rich black bug infestations were reported in the cities of Himamaylan and Kabankalan and the towns of Valladolid and Pontevedra since the start of the year, Provincial Agriculturist Japhet Masculino said yesterday.
Black bugs, that suck the sap of palay or unhusked rice, can be captured through light traps, he said.
The captured black bugs will then be infected with metarhizium fungus, then released back to the field so they can also infect other pests, Masculino explained.
“In four to five days, the infected rice black bugs will die,” he added.
He said that the OPA is producing metarhizium fungus to control the black bugs without resorting to spraying rice fields with chemicals.*
