Transport groups eye fare hike bid
BY CARLA P. GOMEZ

Transport groups in Bacolod will push for a fare hike if the 2020 excise tax on diesel drives prices above P45 per liter, Jessie Ortega, secretary-general of the Sentrong Samahan ng Tsuper at Operators sa Negros, said yesterday.

Ortega said his group and the Federation of Bacolod City Drivers Associations will then push that the current fare for the first four kilometers of P8.50 be raised to P10.

He said, actually, jeepney passengers are only being charged P8 for the first 4 kilometers because of the difficulty in providing change.

Ortega said when the need arises they will file a consolidated petition for a fare hike before the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board.

The third tranche of excise tax increases under the Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion (TRAIN) Actthat will take effect this month is set to drive the retail price of unleaded gasoline by P1 per liter and that of diesel by P1.50 per liter.

Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) prices will also go up.*
