A Negrense police commissioned officer died Wednesday in an encounter with suspected New People’s Army rebels in Sitio Gub-an, Brgy. Aglobong, Janiuay town of Iloilo.
Negrense PCapt. Efren Espanto Jr. was killed after he and his men, who are members of the Regional Mobile Force Battalion 6 Reconnaissance Company, figured in a firefight with NPA rebels for 30 minutes, while on combat operations.
Espanto, of Sitio Bocalan, Brgy. RSB in La Carlota City, Negros Occidental, succumbed to a gunshot wound in the head, reportedly after he tried to rescue his men, from being hit by bullets.
The La Carlota City police is slated to provide honors for Espanto, upon his return to his place in La Carlota City, police chief Maj. Romeo Vargas said yesterday.
Espanto, 29, belonged to the Philippine National Police Academy Class of 2015. He has three other family members, who are also serving with the PNP.
He is survived by his spouse and an 11 month-old daughter.
Lt. Col. Leo Batiles, RMFB 6 commander, is now leading his men in the conduct of pursuit operations against the fleeing NPA rebels, who suffered an undetermined number of casualties, as indicated by bloodstains also found where they positioned.
In a statement, the NPA Coronacion “Waling-Waling” Chiva Command congratulated the Jose Percival Estocada Command for its successful tactical offensive against the RMFB 6 Recon Company, that claimed the life of Espanto and caused injuries to another police personnel.
Lt. Col. Joem Malong, spokesperson of the Police Regional Office 6, yesterday said they were saddened by the loss of Espanto, who was a good commander.
Condemning the terroristic act of the NPA, Malong said they will pursue legal actions against them.*
