PVO levels up animal genetic program
BY MARCHEL P. ESPINA

The Provincial Veterinary Office has levelled up its animal genetic improvement program through artificial insemination of prime beef and dairy cattle breeds.

Provincial Veterinarian Renante Decena said yesterday that PVO recently receive d semen straws of wagyu and angus beef type cattle as well as high-milk producer girolando and gyr from the Department of Agriculture under its United Artificial Insemination Program.

Angus and wagyu cattle are Scottish and Japanese breeds, respectively, known for their finely-marbled meat that typically creates a more tender, juicy, and flavorful meat, he said. He added that girolando and gyr are Brazilian and Indian breeds that are high milk producers , yielding 10 to 15 liters a day, and highly adaptable to tropical condition.
