Fire hits school minutes before drill
BY SHIELA G. GELERA

Minutes before the scheduled fire drill of the school, a fire broke out at the STI-West Negros University four-storey building at Malaspina Street, Barangay Villamonte, Bacolod City, at about 8:23 a.m. yesterday.

This was the third fire incident in Bacolod this week, following the deadly one at Java Pension House that claimed the lives of six persons, and another in Purok Sigay, Barangay 2, that killed a 5-year-old boy.

Personnel of the Bacolod City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office treated several pupils who felt dizzy during the fire.

Investigation by the Bacolod Bureau of Fire Protection showed that the fire started at the stock room behind Room 203 at the second floor of the School of Basic Education (SBE) building, that was occupied by Grade 3-Apple pupils.

The cause of fire, that was put out at about 9:33 a.m., was still being determined.

All the pupils were evacuated and no one was hurt as they were preparing for the fire drill when the fire occurred.

The fire destroyed about P150,000 worth of properties.

Another fire hit a house in Purok Bayabasan, Barangay Bata in Bacolod, at about 1 p.m. yesterday.

The five-minute fire, of still unknown cause, started at the bedroom of the house and destroyed P10,000 worth of properties.

After the fire in Barangay Bata, fire fighters pulled out to respond to another fire call in Barangay Banago, Bacolod, but it turned out negative.

Four fire incidents have taken place in Bacolod in four days since Tuesday, with seven fatalities.*
