The renovation of the Bacolod City Public Plaza is now ongoing and may take a year to complete.
Bacolod Mayor Evelio Leonardia said the Department of Budget and Management has allocated P23 million for Bacolod. The city had a lion’s share of the budget which is normally given proportionately to all local governments.
"We delayed the renovation of the Bacolod Plaza to a certain extent because of the MassKara Festival. But the plaza will be MassKara-resilient," he said.
Leonardia said there are people who wish that the plaza should not be used during the MassKara Festival. But this was his campaign promise in 2004.
He recalled that the MassKara Festival was transferred to another venue by a previous administration. However, he had promised that if he were given a chance, he will return the MassKara to the plaza, he said.
The renovation will include the black and tiles, lighting facilities, the whole walkway, among others. He will sit down with the contractor and ask them to prioritize the black and white tiles, Leonardia said.
The last time the tiles were improved was during his first term as mayor, he said.
Leonardia said the DBM had requested to be informed if the project already had a contract because this will serve as a confirmation that the renovation will be implemented.
The mayor assured that the trees in the plaza will be preserved. He plans to ask the Bacolod Garden Club for its opinion on what to do with them to help maintain the beauty of the plaza, he added.*
