BY MARCHEL P. ESPINA

Farmers from the Third District of Negros Occidental received P6.13-million in rice seeds Wednesday under the Rice Competitiveness Enhancement Fund (RCEF) program .

Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson and Rep. Francisco Benitez (Neg. Occ., 3rd District) led the turnover rites at Victorias City. They were joined by Victorias City Mayor Francis Frederick Palanca, and other local officials.

A total of 4,033 bags were given to the farmers in the district.

Murcia received the bulk of the seed assistance with 1 , 805 bags, worth P2.74 million, followed by Victorias City with 984 bags worth P1.496 million, Silay City with 675 bags worth P953,800, and E.B. Magalona with 616 bags, worth P936,320.

Dina Genzola, supervising agriculturist, said the assistance was part of the P86.82-million rice seeds allocation for Negros Occidental from the national government through RCEF, that has an annual appropriation of P10 billion in the next six years .

RCEF aims to improve the competitiveness of rice farmers and augment their income. Of the allocation, 50 percent will go to rice farm machineries and equipment, 30 percent to rice seed development, propagation, and promotion, and 10 percent each to expanded rice credit assistance, and rice extension services.

Genzola said rice-producing local government units in the province were given priority in the seed assistance .

“It depends on the number of rice hectares,” she added.*
