Two homegrown athletes from Bacolod City, Anne Katherine Quitoy and Bernalyn Bejoy, are competing in the 30th Southeast Asian Games as members of the national athletics team of host Philippines.
Bejoy will represent the country in women’s 400-meter hurdles and in women’s 4x400m while Quitoy will compete in women’s javelin throw.
“Seeing both girls competing in the SEA Games is our ultimate goal. We are proud to see them together with the elite athletes of the national team,” Bejoy and Quitoy’s mentor Addy Arca said.
Arca and her brother Miguel are the champion coaches from Romanito Maravilla National High School in Bacolod City, where Quitoy is presently enrolled as Grade 12 student.
Bejoy graduated from RMNHS in March and started her freshman year as Sports Management student at De La Salle University in Taft.
Another Negrense in the PH athletics team is 4-time gold medalist hammer thrower Arniel Ferrera from the town of Cauayan, who will be in his 10th SEA Games outing.
Ferrera won the gold in 2003 in Hanoi, Vietnam, 2005 in Manila, 2007 in Nakhon Ratchasim, Thailand and in 2009 in Vientien, Laos.
He settled for the silver medal during the 2011 SEA Games in Palembang, Indonesia and in 2013 in Naypitaw, Myanmar and finished with a bronze medal in 2001 and 2017 Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.*
