More than 4,000 bikers joined the 5th “Tour of the Fireflies” in Negros Occidental yesterday, breaking the record of the number of participants in previous years.
The activity also took a twist as two bikers from Sipalay City decided to get married, officiated by Himamaylan City Mayor Raymund Tongson with thousand of bikers as witnesses.
The newly-wed couple Ron Anro Lumogdang and Angelene Mae Cajulo, are both bike enthusiasts and affiliated with the SEMBA bikers group of Sipalay City.
Both have also participated in previous Tour of the Fireflies activities, now on its 5th year, that advocates road sharing, safety and environment protection.
Himamaylan City served as host of this year’s Tour of the Fireflies, which is organized annually by the Provincial Environment and Management Office of Negros Occidental, in tandem with the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office.
Participants from 199 bikers groups in Western Visayas, including some local government officials, endured the heat to complete the 78-kilometer travel distance from Bacolod City to Himamaylan City.
The number of participant–bikers increases every year, with 800 on its first year and about 3,000 last year.
This year’s theme is “River is life. River saves. River is life saver”.
Tongson, who thanked the thousands of bikers for their support, stressed the importance of environmental protection, awareness and conservation, noting that the Earth’s excessive carbon emissions have risen to dangerous levels.
Using bicycles can help bring carbon emissions down, he added.*
