Bacolod City Mayor Evelio Leonardia congratulated Al Hoceima Mayor Mohamed Boudra of Morocco for his recent election as the new president of the United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG)–World Council, a press release from his office said yesterday.
The two city mayors were co-delegates at the recent World Summit of Local and Regional Leaders held at the Durban International Convention Center in Durban, South Africa on Nov. 11-15.
Leonardia represented the country, being the national president of the League of Cities of the Philippines, while Boudra is also the chairman of the Moroccan Association of Presidents of Municipal Councils.
Boudra is a doctor of medicine specializing in radiology. He practiced until 2003 when he was elected head of the communal council and became mayor.
The election of Boudra for the 2019-2022 period took place at the end of the 6th Congress of UCLG and World Summit of Local and Regional Leaders.
Two days before the election, Leonardia and Boudra became seatmates at one of the sessions of the World Summit when the Moroccan mayor approached the Bacolod mayor and sat next to him.
Both mayors agreed to open communication lines between their two organizations and to explore possibilities between their respective cities, the press release said.
Representatives from local and regional governments around the world came together in Durban to “define the global agenda of cities and regions for the coming years and to develop inputs for the upcoming international processes.”*
