BY MARCHEL P. ESPINA

The provincial government of Negros Occidental recognized the local farmers in the province for their efforts in sustaining organic agriculture.

Leading the awarding ceremony at the opening rites of the 14th Negros Island Organic Farmers’ Festival yesterday at the Provincial Capitol grounds in Bacolod City were Senator Cynthia Villar and Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson.

Named as best organic rice producer was Chato Genton of Pontevedra against finalist Wennie Abarillo of Bago City.

No immediate effect over rice
importation suspension: exec
BY MARCHEL P. ESPINA

The suspension of rice importation will have no immediate effect on local farmers, Provincial Agriculturist Japhet Masculino said yesterday.

President Rodrigo Duterte has ordered Agriculture Secretary William Dar on Tuesday to suspend the importation of rice to help farmers suffering from the Rice Tariffication Law (RTL).

Masculino said, it will not immediately translate to an increase in the prices of palay, or unhusked rice, since there is an oversupply of rice in the country due to importation and local production.
