BY NIDA A. BUENAFE

Three veteran shooters from Bacolod City held their ground against competitive rivals from other countries to capture medals and trophies during the 2019 Austral Asia Handgun Championship held Nov. 11-17 at the Front Sight Shooting Range in Batangas.

Bacoleño Wilfredo “Tootsie” Anglo stamped his class in the Super Senior Production Division to capture the championship while Jannette Gonzaga, along with her teammates in the Team Philippines, won the gold medal in Standard Lady Team event.

Fernando “Andy” Gonzaga made his home city, Bacolod, proud by finishing second in the Super Senior Team Open Division with his teammates.

The three shooters were members of the Negros Sports Exchange in Bacolod, the Cebu Pistol and Rifle Association, and the Magnus Sports in Manila.

“We are honored to represent the country and our home city and province in this international competition. We were against top shooters from other countries,” Jannette said.

“We shot 24 very challenging stages and fired almost 450 rounds of ammunitions,” she added.

The Austral Asia Handgun Championship is an international event held every three years and draws hundreds of competitors from different areas of the world.

This year, 1,100 shooters from 44 countries joined the competition sanctioned by the International Practical Shooting Confederation.*
