The provincial government of Negros Occidental has started the distribution of P86.82-million rice seeds to local farmers under the Rice Competitiveness Enhancement Fund (RCEF) p rogram .
A total of 57,118.25 bags allocated for the province are up for distribution, with farmers from Valladolid receiving the first batch of seed assistance yesterday during the turnover rites at the Provincial Capitol grounds in Bacolod City, led by Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson.
Bago City received the bulk of the seed assistance with 9,615 bags, followed by Kabankalan with 5,590, Cauayan with 3,652, San Carlos City with 3,368, and Valladolid with 2,773.
Senior agriculturist Dina Gensola said rice-producing localities in the province were given priority in the assistance, worth P86.82 million, with each bag costing P1,520.
Seed assistance for other localities will also roll out this year, she added.
The RCEF, with an annual appropriation of P10 billion in the next six years, aims to improve the competitiveness of rice farmers and augment their income.
Fifty percent of the allocation will go to rice farm machineries and equipment, 30 percent to rice seed development, propagation, and promotion, 10 percent each to expanded rice credit assistance, and rice extension services.*
