Locsin put self, country
to shame, bishop says
BY CARLA P. GOMEZ

“He puts not just himself but his country to shame.”

That was the reaction yesterday of Bacolod Bishop Patricio Buzon to Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro “Teddy Boy” Locsin Jr.’s calling Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) president Romulo Valles a “moron” in a “white Mu-Mu”.

Locsin, who on November 5 was named an Outstanding Negrosanon in public service, was reported to have slammed Valles in a Tweet after the latter urged Catholics to pray for Vice President Leni Robredo when she accepted the position as co-chair of the Inter-Agency Committee on Anti-Illegal Drugs.

“Say Thank You to the President you moron in a white Mu-Mu. Without him she’d be stuck with her retarded retinue and ecclesiastical idiots like you. How did you pass theology? You’re a disgrace to what is supposed to be the world’s most intellectual religion,” Locsin was reported to have said in a Tweet on Thursday that has since been removed.

Buzon, in reaction said, “It's just unfortunate that he speaks in a way that is unbefitting of his position. He puts not just himself but his country to shame.”

Buzon, following Robredo’s accepting the post of ICAD co-chair, had said, “We pray for her and give her our total support. With her in the picture, we hope that the government’s campaign will be guided by moral principles, respect for life and human rights and gain credibility”.

Malacañang yesterday distanced itself from the criticism made by Locsin against Valles.

“That’s between the Secretary of Foreign Affairs and to those subject of his criticism. We won’t meddle into that,” Panelo said in a radio interview.

“A government official would not react without basis. There must be something that triggered the DFA (Department of Foreign Affairs) Secretary to say the things that he said,” he added.

Panelo, however, said there would be no need for Palace to advise Locsin to watch his language.

“DFA Secretary Locsin is a man of substance. He is professional and he knows what he is doing,” he said.

Caloocan Bishop Pablo Virgilio, in a Facebook post, described Locsin’s remarks as “vitriolic and undiplomatic.”*CPG/PNA
