Neg Occ opens swine
AI center in Candoni
BY MARCHEL P. ESPINA

The provincial government of Negros Occidental opened the P1.05-million Swine Artificial Insemination (AI) and Laboratory Center in Candoni town yesterday.

Leading the launching was Provincial Veterinarian Renante Decena, who said this is the second swine AI center in the province. The first one, in Cadiz City, was opened in August.

He added that two more swine AI centers will be opened in Himamaylan City and E.B. Magalona town before the year ends.

Decena said the facility, equipped with a microscope, semen storage, and other paraphernalia, was a project of the provincial government and will be maintained by the municipal government of Candoni.

He said the provincial government is pushing for AI in breeding swine to cover more areas, especially in the remote villages.

“One ejaculation of boar can process 15 to 30 female pigs,” he added.

The establishment of swine AI centers in these local government units is also to increase hog population in the areas, he said.

“Based on our mapping operations, the production of hogs is low and inadequate in these areas which is why we have to increase the population,” he added.

He stressed that Negros Occidental is the number one producer of backyard swine in the country.

Meanwhile, the provincial government also opened a meat shop and processing center at the public market, also in Candoni, yesterday.

Decena said the facility will be run by the local hog associations.*
