Tours and trainings

Ninfa Leonardia

It is the last quarter of 2019 and many things are happening. With some of the budgets of government offices released, this is the time of the year when trainings and workshops are held and, indeed, three trainings were conducted by the Department of Tourism, in partnership with the provincial government of Negros Occidental thru the Tourism Division, in the past days.

The barrier-free tourism seminar was held, focusing on how to handle persons with disability in tourism, at Sugarland Hotel. Many PWDs visit tourist attractions and destinations where accessibility is now a requirement in meeting international standards and a non-handicap environment is promoted. Carl Malone, a blind singer, entertained participants with songs and showed his talent in spite of difficulties brought about by his disability.

A two-day gender sensitivity training for frontliners was also held, participated in by about 25 DOT-trained and accredited tour guides, with Shangrila Quezon of the TIEZA as resource person.

A two-day farm tourism site guiding training with 45 participants representing about 20 farms and local government units was also held.

The National Commission for Culture and the Arts also commissioned Pixel Art Media Production to come to Negros Occidental to do a Likhang Yaman series of television shows for Sagisag Kultura TV. The series is directed by CJ Andaluz with Erwin Aton as executive producer, and dear friend Frank Rivera as consultant. It was fun and exciting to be interviewed at the Negros Museum with production team Play Layugan, Kyle Gana, Omell Cruz, and Peter Philip Miave; they visited Cadiz, Silay, Talisay, Bago, and Bacolod, witnessed the Sigabong sg Kanyon in Bago and the Adobo Festival in Silay, and filmed performances of cultural groups in the province.

Actress Alice Dixson came all the way from Dumaguete with her pet Labrador to cover interesting places and attractions in the province for her travel vlog. She was accompanied by cultural tour guide Raymond Bayot and they visited May’s Garden, Fresh Start, the heritage houses in Silay, Mambukal Resort, Diotay’s for dinner, and did mask making at Jojo Vito’s place. She has an annual bowling tournament of the stars that benefits Kalipay Negrense as part of her advocacy, caring for the children and promoting the tourism destinations in the Philippines.*
