Outstanding Negrense
wins natíl agri award
BY MARCHEL P. ESPINA

One of this year’s Outstanding Negrenses won a national award for organic agriculture.

Jesus Antonio “Jet” Orbida, president of the Peace Pond Farmers Association in Binalbagan town, placed second in the National Organic Agriculture Achievers’ Awards for the small farmer category of the Department of Agriculture .

Orbida received the award Tuesday during the Na tional Organic Agriculture Congress, an annual gathering of agriculture stakeholders, farmers, and practitioners, in Alfonso, Cavite.

He said the award recognizes the efforts of small farmers in promoting organic farming.

“Not only the moneyed ones can practice organic farming and be profitable,” Orbida said.

His five-hectare organic farm in Binalbagan was recently accredited by the Department of Tourism as the only farm tourism site in southern Negros.

He had been teaching organic farming to small and marginalized farmers all over the country in the past five years .

Last week, Orbida was named as this year’s Outstanding Negrense in Organic Farming, along with four others. The award is the highest recognition from the province of Negros Occidental.

In September this year, he was also recognized in the Regional Organic Agriculture Achievers’ Awards as an outstanding small farmer in the individual category.

Meanwhile, during the awards night, Orbida was joined by Provincial Agriculturist Japhet Masculino, and other local public officials.*
