The construction of center islands from barangays Tangub to Sum-ag, Bacolod City, is expected to be completed by the Department of Public Works and Highways by the first quarter of next year, Bacolod Rep. Greg Gasataya said yesterday.
Gasataya said he has requested the DPWH to put up center islands in these areas along the Araneta Highway to serve as a pedestrian barrier to reduce vehicular accidents that could result to the deaths of pedestrians, especially residents of the area.
He said the 6-lane Araneta highway had become known as a "killer highway" due to the many accidents that had resulted in the death of many individuals since they have no place to stop when they cross the highway.
Gasataya said he requested the DPWH last year to conduct an evaluation and to study the possibility of putting up center islands along Araneta highway after receiving several requests.
He also directed the DPWH to install LED streetlights on both sides of the highway to brighten the area at night, as well as to put up plants to beautify the center islands, he said.*
