The President is on leave?

Ninfa Leonardia

I can’t help squirming whenever I hear or see an item referring to Vice President Leni Robredo, the new head of the Inter-Agency Committee on Illegal Drugs, or ICAD, as a “czar”. That is because I much prefer to have her referred as “czarina”, being a woman, and a very feminine one at that. Well, looks could be deceptive, but the fact that she is taking what should be a he-man’s job, shows us all that the lady is no shrinking violet, and knows how to bide her time.

But one can’t help fearing for her, especially lately, when it seems as if the drug problem has gotten into every aspect of society, where even their latest focus has gone to – of all people and all professions – judges! No less than the Supreme Court is now probing its ranks for the so-called “Narco-judges” or members of the judiciary who are “protectors”, or protecting drug lords and syndicates! Has Leni Robredo taken that under consideration, too?

So far, however, her plans, as she has started them, or has been quoted about, seem very sensible, which is why even the officials of the Church are rooting and praying for her. Only last week, Chief Justice Diosdado Peralta was quoted as saying that they are coming out with resolutions on those alleged Narco-judges. Isn’t that a great shame, to know that some of those creatures used to be the models when we say “as sober as a judge”, are now into this crime as well?

My ears perked up when I saw an item in yesterday’s media about a Cebu mayor who was acquitted by the Sandiganbayan of a case involving the allegedly anomalous purchase of computers. Computers? Now, didn’t a former official here also tangle with the Ombudsman over computers? What happened to that case? Has it been resolved already? People are interested because it involved millions that covered the cost of what was alleged to be an “overpriced” purchases. Just asking.

Yesterday, I learned from a TV report that the President had asked for a three-day leave. What could be the matter with him? I hope he is only fagged out by the day-to-day affairs of his office, and not having a relapse of some of those ailments he had disclosed before that sounded quite serious. Well, he is our President, the one we elected to lead us, so let us wish him well, and pray for his recovery. It is good that he has finally decided to come clean and admit that he is human, too. Let us hope he gets well very soon.

Maybe the President has been affected by the things occurring lately that call for his attention and concern. There have been earthquakes, fires, water lack, floods, tornadoes, and so many disturbances caused by Nature that could be worrying, especially if you are the leader. So it is good that he has finally given a big part of his problem over to his vice president, who will surely try her best to prove that she can be a partner in the job, and not be on standby all the time.

Now it is very possible that the barangay elections will be postponed to 2022. That will give incumbents two more years to do their thing, and I’m sure they are very happy about it. But alas, for those barangays who have non-performing leaders, they must be devastated to think of two more years of putting up with mediocre, or actually bad leadership. Will the same go for the Sangguniang Kabataan? What about those who will already have passed the age limit before 2022?

Tonight is the night when one of my favorite singers – of my generation, of course – Engelbert Humperdinck, will hold a concert at the New Frontier Theater in Manila. Oh, how I wish I could be there to listen to him. I’m sure a lot of others of his “fans” are feeling bad, too. Who wouldn’t want to hear “Release me”, “Cuando, Cuando, Cuando”, “Angel on my shoulder” which, by the way, is the theme of this concert – another time and in person, at that? And also “Spanish Eyes”, and “Am I that easy to forget” directly from him, too?*
