What if the joke turns serious?

Ninfa Leonardia

Although I thought many people approved the acceptance of Vice President Leni Robredo of the position of co-chairperson of the Interagenoy Committee on Anti-Illegal Drugs ,it looks as if there are dogs in the manger who would like – or even wish―her to fall. One of them is Philppine Star Columnist Carmen Pedrosa, who calls the designation of Robredo a “big joke”. By the way, she even concludes her write-up by saying it is Robredo the opposition has chosen to bring down the PRRD government”.

***

Well, that is not surprising coming from this columnist. Some people are really suspicious of those who they may suspect to be do-gooders just for personal gains. But for sure the Vice President knows the danger she will be exposing herself to in this job. Even former General and now Senator Ping Lacson has warned her to “watch her back”. And, really, who knows? Since the EJKs, or extra judicial killings , and other methods had not done much, except to decimate our population, shouldn’t we try some other means?

***

The fact alone that Robredo is planning to coordinate with other countries and even the United Nations, to me, shows, that she has been doing a lot of home work on this. And now she seems to be getting support from the right persons. What she doesn’t need are killjoys who wish her to fail even before she has started. Her critics say she is being made a “fall guy”, but what of it? She is not stupid, but it seems to me that, by this, she is even showing that she loves her country and its people and willing to take the risk. I think Pedrosa should look another way and start writing a book like the one she did on Imelda Marcos that will surely make a lot od money, if not notoriety.

Meanwhile, the tenth anniversary of the Maguindanao Massacre case has already passed, and still the verdict on the accused has not been handed down. While it is true that there were so many involved that it could take some time to resolve, surely ten years are too much? The massacre took place in November 2009, and here we are, and it is November 2019 already, and the judge has reportedly asked for more time. No wonder some people opt to take the law into their own hands!

The news from the government agency says that Malaca ñang is hopeful that Congress will pass the measure that will prohibited the use of plastic products in the country. Did I read that right? Or was the Philippine News Agency generalizing? I thought it was only one-use plastic items that will be banned, i.e. such things as plastic bags and wrappings of good that will be prohibited. But “plastic” is now used for a lot of necessary things, not only wrappers and bags. Even surgical instrument could be made of plastic.

***

Home appliances are also now coming out in plastic. Cabinets, baby cribs, chairs, tables, even beds, and , oh so many now needed items are made of plastic. Will they all be eliminated? I ask this because if I am not mistaken, plastic is ever used to replace body parts in surgeries. Ban those, too? Of course the word “plastic” has now gotten various meanings. You can say a person is plastic when he or she is not reliable. That kind of “plastic” should also be banned!

Have you noticed that the people cannot seem to wait for December to start their Christmas preperations and promotions? Already the media, especially print, is full of creatures of Christmas trees and Santa Clauses! And Christmas is more than a month away yet. But I don’t blame those who are starting their Christmas shopping already. Who wants to get in the midst of the Christmas rush, anyway? And, naturally, shops and other establishments are taking advantage of this. Note their promos and come-ons being out already.

***

But who can blame them? Christmas is really the happiest time of the year. But it should also be the holiest, because it is the time when Our Lord was born. The only catch is that now the people, not only ours, but all other nations that are Christian, seem to ignore the message of the season which is for “Peace and goodwill to all mankind” Anyway, Happy Christmas anticipation to all.*
