He did not survived the second attempt.
A jail guard, who survived an assassination try on him seven months ago, was killed in an ambush in Purok Katipunan, Barangay Cabug in Bacolod City, at about 11:50 p.m. Friday.
Jail Officer 1 Jason Vargas, 28, of Barangay Handumanan in Bacolod was on board a white Mitsubishi Strada pickup truck when he was felled by gunshots to the head, a police report said.
His relative Gian Philip Yoro, 25, meanwhile, was hit in the body and was brought to the Bacolod South Hospital.
Other passengers of the pickup truck were retired Senior Jail Officer 2 Joeby Vargas, 59, Jason’s father, Philip Jurgen Yoro, 27, and Femmy Taño, 23, sustained bruises but were all safe.
Investigation showed that the pickup, driven by the jail officer, came from SP Village in Barangay Pahanocoy, Bacolod, when they were followed by a white Toyota Hilux, a blue Innova, and a Yamaha Sniper, Kawasaki Bajaj, and Honda XRM motorcycles.
One of the motorcycles blocked the pickup truck of the victims and fired a gun. Vargas tried to maneuver but the suspects continued to attack, causing the pickup truck to swerve and hit a piggery, where it stopped.
The passengers of the pickup jumped out of the vehicle and hid, while the suspects escaped.
Recovered from the crime scene were the wrecked pickup with plate number ZKB 970, a .9mm caliber pistol, two magazines, and 26 cartridges of a 9mm pistol, police records show.
Personnel of the Scene of the Crime Operatives also found fired cartridges of 7.62 mm, 5.56 mm, 9 mm, .45, and 7.62 guns, fired bullets, metal fragments, a 5.56 magazine, a cellular phone, and two USB flash drives.
Police Lt. Jonito Pastrana, Station 8 chief, said yesterday that they are considering several angles such as business, drugs, grudges, and work in the death of Vargas.
Pastrana said Vargas had fetched his father and cousins from a cockpit before the incident.
Their family business had something to do with fighting cocks, Pastrana said, but added that the killing could also be related to the work of Vargas as a jail officer.
Further investigation is ongoing to identify the suspects and determine the motive of the killing.
FIRST AMBUSH ATTEMPT
On April 5, 2019, two motorcycle-riding suspects also shot and wounded the jail officer on board a red Mitsubishi Strada pickup, while his sister was spared, at the exit area of the Bacolod Real Estate Development Corp. port at Burgos-Palanca streets in Bacolod.
Vargas, who was on the passenger’s side, had been hit in the forearm while his sister Yvette Joy, who was driving the vehicle, was unharmed.*
