Zubiri, Benitez join call
for lower Negros airfare

Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri and Rep. Alfredo Abelardo Benitez (Neg. Occ., 3rd District) said yesterday they are pushing for a third airline to ply the Manila to Bacolod-Silay Airport route to help bring down airfare rates.

Businessman Eduardo Alunan has been lobbying for the entry of a third airline to serve the needs of Negrenses, saying the airfare rates of the two airlines that fly to the Bacolod Silay Airport are excessive.

“This advocacy was borne out of desperation over the predatory rates of Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines, whose round trip rates are as high as P14,000 and P17,000 respectively,” Alunan said. moremoremore

Pope given painting of sacada Jesus

Pope Francis received a painting of a “sakada” Jesus from the San Carlos diocese in Negros Occidental on Monday.

San Carlos Bishop Gerardo Alminaza presented the painting "Hesus sa Katubhan" by Fray Jaazeal “Tagoy” Jakosalem of the Order of Augustinian Recollects to Pope Francis at the Vatican.

Alminaza and other bishops from the country were in the Vatican for their “ad limina apostolorum” visit, which is scheduled every five years, for them to report on the status of their respective dioceses and archdioceses to the pontiff. moremoremore

Cloudseeding cancelled

The cloud-seeding operations proposed to ease the effects of the dry spell in Negros Occidental will not push through after rains started pouring over the province.

Dina Genzola, supervising agriculturist of the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist, said the Department of Agriculture in Region 6 has deferred the cloud seeding operations as the rainy season will start in June.

“The budget is still there. They will use it if there’s a really a need for cloud-seeding,” she said. She added that the procurement process took more than a month.
