A farmer believed to be mentally unstable ran amuck yesterday and hacked dead three members of his family and a barangay kagawad in Brgy. Balicotoc, Ilog, Negros Occidental.
Armed with a bolo, the arrested suspect identified as William Magbato, went on a hacking spree and killed his wife, Melerna, 55, nephew Ryan Olitan, 18, Kagawad Nelson Balsomo and his sister-in-law, Marianita Magbato, Lt. Col. Patricio Tomales, 15th Infantry Battalion commander, said yesterday.
Tomales said one of the Army troopers, who responded to the hacking spree incident, was able to neutralize the suspect, by shooting him in the right hand.
He added that the suspect, Magbato, 52, was immediately turned over to the Ilog police, for treatment of his injury, and detention.
Also injured in the hacking spree were Jessie Terones, Janice Elamparo and Jamie Joy Tiaga, the Ilog police said.
Balsomo was declared dead on arrival at the Lorenzo Zayco District Hospital in Kabankalan City, where the three injured victims were brought for treatment.
But the three injured victims were later transferred to a hospital in Bacolod City.
A 24-inch bolo was recovered by the barangay officials and tanods led by Balicotoc barangay chairman Mark Joseph Valenciano, who also helped Army soldiers in arresting the suspect.
Valenciano, in an interview over Bombo Radyo, said that the suspect claimed he was not aware of what he did to his wife and the other victims he had hacked.*
