Amazon gives up

A self-confessed member of the New People’s Army gave up the armed struggle and surrendered two firearms and a rifle grenade to the 62nd Infantry Battalion on March 24, Army 1Lt. Maria Allein Veluz reported yesterday.

Identified only as a certain Ka Vic, Veluz said the former NPA amazon surrendered an M1 carbine rifle with two magazines, a 12-gauge shotgun and a rifle grenade.

Ka Vic told the Philippine Army that she was recruited by a certain Remonde Lapisan, alias Dindo, and Lourdes Quirante from Kabataang Makabayan as a party branch member.

Veluz said Ka Vic also served as a former medical officer of Sangay ng Partido sa Lokalidad (SPL) in clustered sitios of Bryg. Buenavista, Himamaylan City.

She added that Ka Vic is joining 10 other former rebels who will soon avail of the Enhanced-Comprehensive Local Integration of the Department of Interior and Local Government.

Ka Vic is also expected to receive cash assistance, the amount of which is equivalent to the firearms and explosives she had surrendered, Veluz also said.*
