Isabela puts out dumpsite fire

Isabela Mayor Joselito Malabor said yesterday that he had sent a fire truck and fire fighters to put out the fire that broke out at the open dumpsite at Hacienda Caram, Barangay Guintubhan in Isabela, Negros Occidental, Thursday.

A Facebook user sent photos and drone videos of the burning dumpsite to the DAILY STAR, asking if the Isabela government has waste segregation and solid waste management facilities.

The social media user added that the adjacent sugarcane farms were affected by the incident and several residents, especially students passing the area, has been complaining.

Malabor said that several scavengers burned the garbage after salvaging some items, while the person assigned to guard the dumpsite that was being bulldozed, was away.

The area in Hacienda Caram is the only open dumpsite of the local government of Isabela since it is still looking for a property where they can install a sanitary landfill, Malabor said.*
