70-year-old farmer shot dead

Land conflict is being looked into by the police as having triggered the killing a farmer on Tuesday in Sitio Minauyan, Brgy. Minautok, Calatrava, Negros Occidental.

The victim, identified by the Calatrava police as Jose Balopeños, 70 and a widower, succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds. He died on the spot, the police said.

Three of the five suspects were named by the police as Leonardo and Reneboy Pahayahay of Brgy. Marcelo, Calatrava, and a certain Gaga Jimeno of Brgy. Bago, Salvador Benedicto.

Calatrava police investigation showed that the victim was cultivating his farm lot, when the five suspects, who were armed with assorted firearms, shot him several times.

The suspects reportedly fled towards Brgy. Minapasok, Calatrava.

Maj. Rocky Desear, Calatrava police officer-in-charge, said that land conflict and personal grudges are among the prime motives in the killing of the victim.

Murder charges are now being readied by the police for filing against the suspects.

In Brgy. Culipapa, Hinobaan, Negros Occidental, a farmer’s group leader identified as Lino Dayado also died on Tuesday, after he was hacked with a bolo allegedly by Jose Paculangan.

Police investigation showed that a heated confrontation ensued between Dayado, president of the Culipapa Farmers Association (CUFA) in Hinobaan, and Paculangan, that led to the hacking incident.

Paculangan fled after the incident, bringing with him the bolo he had used in killing Dayado.*
