Ceres-Negros FC will lead seven other teams when the Philippine Premier League debuts in March.
The PPL was launched in Manila last week in a press conference with league commissioner Bernie Sumayao, Philippine Football Federation (PFF) president Nonong Araneta, and tournament director Ritchie Gannaban in attendance.
PPL officials said the teams will play in a triple-round-robin home-and-away format with some of the games to be played in neutral venues.
The league announced during the official launch that eight teams will see action in the first season, among them, Ceres-Negros FC, Kay a-Iloilo, Laguna Stallion.
Also expected to join the new league are the Green Archers United and Air Force.
“A vibrant domestic league is important for the growth of the game and we think the PPL has what it takes to succeed. We are all very excited,” Araneta said during the press conference. The PFF, he added remains as the governing body of the league.
Meanwhile, Ceres-Negros FC expressed its commitment and support to the PPL.
Club administrator Nicolas Golez said the club will continue to strive and work hard for excellence.
“We look forward to provide Ceres Negros FC and Filipino football fans quality and entertaining football,” Golez said.*
