Alunan hopes Negros
supports Senate bid

Former Interior Secretary Rafael “Raffy” Alunan III, who is running for senator, yesterday said he hopes to get the support of his fellow Negrenses.

Alunan served in the cabinets of presidents Fidel Ramos and Corazon Aquino as secretary of the Interior and Local Government and secretary of Tourism, respectively. In recent years he has also been a close ally of President Rodrigo Duterte.

The last time Negros Occidental had a senator of its own was 54 years ago, while Panay has had five to six senators, he said.

Alunan, who was visiting Negros Occidental and meeting with local officials, said he stands for national unity.

It is in unity that we can move our country forward, he said.

Alunan, who is optimistic of winning his bid for the senate, said traditional surveys that do not include him in the winning list cannot be relied on for the outcome of the polls.

He said the results of conventional surveys and those on social media are like day and night.

“Traditional survey firms better explain how their survey teams are really doing their surveys because I know their secret and they don’t paint a very good picture of integrity and honesty,” he said.

Alunan said he is confident that his active engagement in social and mainstream media over the years has provided him with the exposure needed for his senatorial bid.*
