Unity team, NGOs back Mar
BY CARLA P. GOMEZ

Unity for Progress Team members and non-government organizations in Negros Occidental have committed to support the senatorial bid of Mar Roxas, former Manapla Mayor Manuel Escalante said yesterday.

Members of the Unity for Progress Team that include Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr., Vice Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson, former Rep. Jeffrey Ferrer and Bago Mayor Nicholas Yulo were among the officials who met with Judy Araneta Roxas, mother of Mar, at the Seda Hotel in Bacolod City Thursday, Escalante said.

Lacson is running for governor and Ferrer for vice governor of Negros Occidental under the unity team.

Mrs. Roxas yesterday also met with barangay health workers, youth leaders, members of non-government organizations and scholars of the Gerry Roxas Foundation to appeal for support for her son.

“We need a lot of votes to cover for areas where Mar is not very known,” Mrs. Roxas, who is from Negros Occidental, said.

She said it took a long time for her son to decide to run for senator this time because he had been enjoying his life away from politics.

However, the pull of wanting to serve the country in the end made him decide to run, she said.

“I did not try to influence him, one way or the other, this was really his decision,” she said.

All his life he has always wanted to serve the country, Mrs. Roxas said of Mar.

That is because this has been imbibed in his heart and mind ever since he was young by his grandfather , former  Philippine president Manuel Roxas , and father, Senator  Gerry Roxas , she said.

She said her son is very bright and committed.

Edith Villanueva, a non-government organization leader, called on the public to support Mar. “We really need a man like him to represent us in the Senate”, she said.

“I think that we should support him, especially in this time of confusion and chaos in our country. Mar is a very decent person, we need a man with moral courage, has no blemish on his record, and is a public servant who puts country above self” she said.*
