A total of 534 athletes from Negros Occidental will compete in the 2019 Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association Meet scheduled Feb. 17 to 23 in Roxas City, Capiz.
DepEd Provincial Sports head Romeo Sison said the athletes will be accompanied by 181 coaches, trainors, and chaperones and at least 70 delegation officials.
For this year’s participation to the WVRAA, Sison said they submitted a budget proposal of P15 million or an increase of P3 million from last year’s P12 million budget.
“Included in our budget proposal are the training allowances of our athletes. Training has already started and team officials or school administrators who paid for the expenses of our athletes will be duly refunded once the budget is approved,” Sison said.
The Negros Occidental delegation will be staying at the President Manuel Roxas Memorial School which is about 2 kilometers away from the Villareal Stadium, main venue of the WVRAA.
Meanwhile, Negros Occidental will be competing in 15 events in elementary division and 17 events in secondary.
The Negrense athletes will be defending their crown in elementary basketball, football, volleyball girls’ and softball and in girls’ athletics in the secondary division.
“As usual, we have Iloilo as our strongest opponent although we expect the other provinces to step up and threaten Negros and Iloilo’s dominance of the WVRAA.
Sison said the Regional Sports Council will meet on Jan. 22 in Roxas City to discuss various concerns relative to the staging of the 2019 WVRAA in Capiz.*NAB
