The Junior Mustangs of STI-West Negros University prevailed in Game 3 yesterday to capture the championship and avenged last year’s loss to Bacolod Tay Tung High School in the best-of-three finals of the National Basketball Training Center (NBTC) Bacolod qualifier.
After taking the lead in the finals in Game 1 with an 80-73 win, the Junior Mustangs failed to seal the championship in Game 2 as the Thunderbolts pulled off a 66-63 victory to force a decider.
With the winner-take-all mindset, the young Mustangs kept the defending champions at bay while sustaining their momentum until the final whistle.
Among those who witnessed the final game between the two top teams in the tournament were the Negros Basketball Association officers led by its president, Oscar “Dodong” Bascon.
The win allowed STI-WNU to represent Bacolod in the national finals of NBTC scheduled in March.
Now on its 12th year, the NBTC featured more teams this year and a 3x3 competition to make the league more interesting.*NAB
