The leading ladies

Ninfa Leonardia

We have to sympathize with our fellow Asian brothers and sisters in Indonesia whose country was hit by a devastating tsunami that took a heavy toll during the holiday season. There has always been a firm friendship between our two countries and they, too, commiserate with us during our moments of catastrophes. But it looks as if we are not spared by the erratic whims of climate change and now we are also in need of sympathy and aid for the destruction and deaths caused by Usman.

Indeed, the whole world is now undergoing so many disasters and nature-related incidents, aside from the man-made ones that have also caused a toll in lives. Now that the election season is almost upon us, the latter continues to also claim lives in the most unnatural ways. But then it can be said that these are things we have wrought upon ourselves for allowing the business of politics to become the dirty exercise that it has become. Not that election-related incidents are now hogging the headlines in the way extra-judicial killings used to do.

But we can’t help being thankful that our people have at least realized that the holy season of Christmas is not the time for mayhem in the exercise of merrymaking. This happened in great numbers in the past when some people equated the welcoming of the New Year with the use of highly destructive “playthings” called fireworks, that developed from innocent little noisemakers in the past, into murderous noisemakers that also claimed or maimed those who played with them.

By the way it is time again to show our concern for our fellow Pinoys, like the victims of recent typhoon Usman, who did not seem too dangerous, at first, but actually caused a lot of trouble in the Bicol Region and the Eastern Visayas, that include our neighboring islands. So, perhaps our do-gooders here should focus on these areas for their aid and grants. I hope our civic clubs take the cue and act on this.

Look out for Les Girls! The recent polls show two unbeatable women leading the line-up for senator in the coming elections in May. But it is not surprising, because these two have proven their worth as lawmakers, even if I don’t know if they are lawyers or not. But it does look as if non-lawyers often get the pulse beat of their people better than those too stepped in legalese. And the two ladies are former presidential bet Grace Poe and Cynthia Villar. Now, we know Grace Poe, but for a sudden twist of fate, could have given our country its third female president. But fate intervened.

As for Cynthia Villar, the lady has proven herself as well, and is perhaps the lady senator who knows the pulsebeats of the countryside, being the most visible and participative. And she does her job in such a practical and, well, “housewifely” way, that surely clicks with the common tao. I wish these two all the luck. As for the other ladies also in the running, it may take a lot of effort and cash to catch up with these two. They are tried and tested members of the Senate, and their experience there bodes well for our country.

I bet a lot of public school students are envying their counterparts in the private schools who still have several days more of freedom before starting classes. Will this mean, however, that they will have an earlier closing too? That should console them, because a longer summer vacation should be more enjoyable than going to school during typhoon season. But ordinary motorists should prepare for the traffic rush they will encounter once the private schools join those in public schools at yearend.

This is something truly for the books, A baby boy was found still alive after being buried under the ruins of an apartment that collapsed in Moscow, Russia due to an explosion. The baby, obviously a girl, had survived in what was described a miracle by rescue hardboiled rescuers who reportedly cried upon finding her. And another miracle: the mother was also found alive and both rushed to a hospital. I bet the people there are all anxiously looking out for the wee one who has become a celebrity.*
