The buy-bust operation in Brgy. 1 Poblacion, Sagay City, Negros Occidental, yesterday turned bloody, with the drug suspect, who shot a policeman, dying in the shoot-out.
The drug suspect, identified as Leobon Charita, was declared dead on arrival at the Lopez District Foundation Hospital in Sagay City, the police said.
Chief Inspector Antonio Benitez, Sagay City police officer-in-charge, said yesterday that SPO1 Ronie Sanico was shot in the abdomen by Charita, whom he described as a notorious drug peddler, during the buy-bust operation.
Luckily, Sanico was wearing a bullet proof vest, Benitez said. He was brought to the Lopez District Hospital for treatment.
Benitez said he came to the rescue of Sanico, by shooting Charita.
While he was saddened by the death of Charita, Benitez said they had to defend themselves from further attack and harm.
Recovered from the scene of incident were a .38 caliber revolver with ammunition, 11 big and small sachets of suspected shabu, and P500 in marked money.
Sanico is now in stable condition, Benitez said.
Meanwhile, another drug suspect was arrested Thursday during a buy-bust operation in Purok Mabini, Brgy. Canlubang, Ilog, Negros Occidental.
Chief Inspector Norberto Barniso, Ilog police chief, identified the arrested suspect as Jun Melandro Basa, 34, and a tricycle driver.
The arrest of Basa yielded three sachets of suspected shabu, P300 in marked money and a cellular phone.
Policemen also apprehended Arnel Mallosa, 22, and a baker, at Crossing Bato in Brgy. Gil Montilla, Sipalay City, for carrying a deadly weapon, in violation of Comelec Resolution No. 10446.*
