Cops arrest candidate
for gun violation

A candidate for town councilor, who is facing murder charges, was arrested Wednesday by the police for illegal possession of a firearm in Brgy. Patun-an, Calatrava, Negros Occidental.

Nabbed by the Calatrava police, Criminal Investigation and Detection Group and Regional Mobile Force Battalion 6 men was Patun-an barangay kagawad Alexander Apurado, 55.

Apurado, who is running for councilor in Calatrava town, is facing murder charges, and has been denied bail by Judge Estefanio Libutan, regional police spokesperson, Supt. Joem Malong, said yesterday.

The arrest of Apurado, who was also alleged by the police to be the leader of an organized crime group, also yielded a .22 caliber Magnum revolver with four ammunition.

The organized crime group was also linked by the police to robbery-hold-up incidents and land-grabbing issues in northern Negros and Bacolod City, respectively.

Shortly after the arrest of Apurado, a barangay resident, whose identity was withheld by the police, also surrendered an M-1 caliber 30 carbine with nine magazines containing 119 live ammunition, the police said.*
